Formulas and Attractors of the Movement in Urban Structure
Abstract: Human behavior within the city structure, as one of the most unpredictable phenomena, represents one of the most current research topics of urban design and planning. Special attention is paid to the mobility of people depending on the functional-operational and mass-spatial characteristics of the urban structure. Whether it is the valorization of the existing urban structures, or the design of new ones, the knowledge of this behavior has a major impact on the effectiveness of the urban structure from the economical distribution of shops and services, suitable location of the park to the creation of a quiet residential environment. The researchers have already managed to find key attractors of the concentration of people in the public space and proved the vitality of the urban structure according to its quantitative or qualitative parameters. Several research methods (for example, space syntax) are now able to more or less effectively simulate the movement of fictitious people (agents) on the basis of this knowledge. Even now, it is still very complicated to apply mathematical algorithms to human behavior, and therefore, despite the great progress in this area, the movement of people in the urban structure is still relatively difficult to estimate. The main objective of this research was to evaluate the tendencies of human movement in the urban structure of a selected city. Based on qualitative analyses using survey, the research focuses on choosing a walking route from multiple choices moving from point "A" to point "B". The analysis records not only the route itself but also the reasons for selecting the route from the point of view of its effectiveness as well as the perception of the participants. The results of the survey are finally confronted with previous theoretical knowledge about the attractors in the public space.
