Riegrovy sady - revitalization of a listed park
Abstract: Riegrovy sady is an important listed park located in Prague 2 - Vinohrady. Three stages of the overall revitalisation of the park have already been completed. By the end of 2022, the third and final stage of the restoration will be completed. More than two thirds of the entire park will be newly revitalised. I am the author of the study of the overall revitalisation of the park and I am also gradually drawing up the projects and subsequently leading the implementation of the individual stages of the comprehensive restoration of the park under my supervision. In 2020, the implementation carried out so far advanced to the final of the Architects' Grand Prix. In the last twelve years, the park, whose original design was created by Leopold Batěk, an important personality in our field from the early 20th century, has been revitalised. His very valuable compositional design of the park could be shifted during the ongoing revitalisation to meet the current needs of the park. The entire park is an immovable cultural monument. The revitalisation is therefore complex, all paths in the park's parts have been newly laid in ochre-coloured surface, the park's retaining walls have been restored, both main staircases and all elements of small architecture have been restored too, many of them with the participation of authorised restorers, a new amphitheatre made of sandstone blocks of stone has been built, and the absorption of all rainwater within the park has been solved by means of numerous underground water collection galleries located throughout the park. The park is newly connected to the adjacent Garden of Eden. New planting of large areas of cover woody plants on the slopes, which significantly contribute to the change in the microclimate of the park, has been implemented, and about 20,000 bulbs have been planted, which colour the park area with their flowers in the spring season. As the author of the design, I am in direct contact with the Prague 2 Municipal District, which organizes and finances both the actual revitalization and maintenance of the entire park area, as well as with the National Heritage Institute in Prague, which supervises the entire project.
