Characteristics of Municipalities Regarding the Network of Regional Railways in the Czech Republic
Abstract: For a long time the railway network of the Czech Republic has showed up the same range, except some partial railways that were relayed or abandoned. In spite of this, there is still the pressure on the significant railway network reduction in railway lines of regional significance which sometimes causes a serious disproportion between transport demands and transport supplies. The aim of this paper is to show and comment on the basic typology of municipalities that are provided with regional railways in order to distinguish their potential in the perspective of the future railway transport operation, and therefore the possibility of the reconstruction or relocation railway lines including stations and stops planning. Data primarily from Census 2011 and Spatial Analysis Document 2014 about municipal territory, demographic characteristics, transportation network location and commuting are the main input into the analysis. The data was compiled for all municipalities where the regional railways have the station or the stop. The output is the set of visualized statistical data related to individual characteristics and their interdependencies. The typology of municipalities is the keystone for a more sophisticated cluster analysis and subsequent determination of optimal position of train stations and stops in different types of municipalities.
