Large Ski Jumping Hills in Harrachov – History, Defining Values and Future Use

Abstract: The SIAL team's work is associated with a number of technical but also sports facilities, where the aesthetics of machinism and later high-tech architecture was the logical answer to the questions that the projects raised. The paper starts by summarizing information about the acceptance of high-tech aesthetics in our environment, especially in the contemporary competitions and their realizations in which SIAL's work has appeared since the beginning. In more detail, the text focuses on a very early example of high-tech architecture in former Czechoslovakia, the complex of large ski jumping hills in Harrachov. It represents one of the most interesting SIAL construction projects of its time, that is also interesting on the international scale. The paper further develops the idea of restoration of the currently abandoned ski jumping area and opens the questions of its possible adaptation, protection or new use (application of possible solutions from the field of reconstruction of industrial objects).
