Active Public Spaces in Suburban Rural Settlements in the Environs of Bratislava. Case Study on the Village of Hamuliakovo.

Abstract: After the fall of socialism in Czechoslovakia rural settlements in the environs of Bratislava are in process of their huge transformation due to their suburbanisation. These changes has impact on originally natural character of surrounding countryside, on their material and functional arrangement of residential structures, on their business attractiveness and last but not least also on location and functional types of public spaces. Nowadays we use to call these settlements as ´transition areas´ which are characteristic by mixture of municipal and rural elements and features. It has also impact on quantitive and qualitive indicators of public spaces and amenities. The present paper directly continues with previous research and evaluates active public spaces in Hamuliakovo village, which is lying on the Dunajska Streda´s development axis of Bratislava. Our research, in its first part, is focused on verification of impact of location of this settlement in its area´s structure on number and types of public spaces in Hamuliakovo. In the second part of our research we create definition of qualitive indicators of public spaces in suburban settlements and afterward we use these indicators as model criteria for evaluating those active public spaces which are situated both in original and in contemporary village centre in Hamuliakovo. The result of our paper is evaluation of public amenities in the village of suburban rural settlements. On the basis of our findings in the case of Hamuliakovo we can compare it with the others settlements lying on the south development axis, also with those city districts which are situated on the edge of Bratislava and have rural character. It also allows us compare it with cross-border settlements. On the bases of these comparison we can create relevant requirements for localisation, size, both horizontal and vertical content of public spaces in those areas of suburban settlements in the environs of Bratislava, which are considered for further development and are not built-up till now.
