Public Greenery and its Categories in the Capital City of Prague in the Course of the 20th Century

Abstract: The greenery is in our society generally considered as a part of the quality environment and healthy cities. It is a part of the city´s urban structure and has a recreational, cultural and aesthetic function. Public greenery constitutes an important part in the system of urban green areas. Public greenery is currently getting into the spotlight of the whole society. Public Greenery is an area which is dedicated to the people who can spend their free time there. The specificity of the Prague urban green is the fact that from the beginning it was formed on unique ruggedness of the terrain, on distributed valleys, hills, ridges and plateaus. At the same time the Vltava River valley is not only a space and compositional axis of the city but also represents a natural backbone of the system of urban greenery. The main objective of the paper is to characterize Prague’s green areas in the course of the 20th century and define its categories and the balance of the public green areas in particular decades of the 20th century. Another objective is to describe different views on the public greenery issue and urban green system in the 20th century which is demonstrated on the examples of other European cities.
